Mare Island

Mare Island became the first U.S. naval base on the West Coast in 1854. During WWII, the shipyard turned out scores of ships and submarines. Closed in 1996, Mare Island is now a National Register historic district which was purchased by City of Vallejo in 2002 for reuse and redevelopment. The Master Plan promises big changes including 7 million sq ft of commercial space and 1,400 residences. If you dig naval history, abandoned buildings and the beautiful effects of rust and erosion, Mare Island is the place for you.
