Chilly Night, Chill Place

Our July public sketching night was held at the hospitable Ocean View Brew Works, on San Pablo Ave., Albany. We had such a good time, sketching, sipping, and meeting new sketchers.  I need to come back to learn more about the brewing process (to sketch the equipment better). Thank you Veronica and Melina for welcoming us!

Alviso Slough April Showers

Between showers, I could see the mustard growing by the slough.
The small yellow entrance to the boardwalk.
The clouds over  the hills were reflected in the water.

Between Storms

I was able to spend a quiet day in San Francisco, watching the Bay, and sketching a few scenes.

Girl Meets Dirt!

GIRL meets DIRT at the Eastsound Farmer's Market
One of the highlights of my annual visit to Orcas was meeting and visiting with the folks from GIRL meets DIRT. This small enterprise located in Eastsound, Orcas Island, Washington State supports local orchards and heirloom produce. The jams reflect the "taste of place". Thank you Audra Query Lawlor for the work that you, your staff and local growers do. And thank you for letting me sketch!

Autumn Colors in Sonoma County

I was able to get very close to the vines to sketch and paint!
You may see a few little raisins left on the vine among the blaze of color.

Going Back to Fairyland

Pinocchio

Thanks to C.J. Hirschfield (Executive Director) and Shannon Taylor (Director of Art & Restoration) for welcoming us back to Fairyland. Some of us are returning after childhood visits. (See previous posts). Some, like myself, are transported back to classic nursery stories come to life. After a few minutes, I am not working to get the picture "right"; I am playing with my sketchbook, pen and watercolors. Fairyland is a sketcher's dream. Fairyland is also a jewel among the treasures of Lake Merritt for everyone to visit (with a kid) and enjoy!

The Ruth Bancroft Garden Menagerie

Swimming fish, metallic spiders and other critters clustered underneath the Blue Oak.
Down the path were the sculptural cacti. Please see previous sketches.

Good By Oscar's

Oscar's served so many Berkeley students over the years., including friends. I'm glad we could  pay respect to this local landmark by sketching it before it is gone. Please see other sketches in this blog and on Facebook.

Sketching at West Hills Nursery, Occidental

I was reminded about a poem:

so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens
William Carlos Williams
(1883-1963)
No chickens, but at the curve of a path--a lily pond with hummingbirds and dragonflies!

Sketching at Tacubaya on Fourth St, Berkeley

I love sketching at Tacubaya because of the vibrant colors, casual atmosphere, hospitality, and great food. I was going to focus on people, but first had to draw the bottles at the window enclosing little glass cacti. Then on to the cooks rapidly cooking and serving myriad dishes, including take-outs. I also sketched a selection of people as they sat or waited in line, backlit by the hot pink wall.

And More from Lux

Add caption
Everything for an adventure at Lux...a vintage leather pullman bag atop a zebra rug (that's the tail swishing up against the side) and Meiji period armor complete with face mask. I'm ready!

Snowballs In the Bay Area?

This little van is parked in my neighborhood. Skylite Snowballs, "its a baltimore thing", features shaved ice infused with seasonal flavors according to its website:  www.skylitesnowballs.com. The bottles at the window reflect a rainbow of colors and, I imagine, tastes. I hope to try one out sometime when this van is open for business. In the meantime, I'll content myself sketching it!

Sketching at Serrahna

We stepped out of the cold grey dusk into Serrahna where we were welcomed by Andrea Serrahn to sketch. I was dazzled by the beautiful colors and textures  of the clothing and handicrafts in her boutique. It was hard to select what to sketch (and not browse)!
