Some SF sketching friends and I went out to Laguna Honda last Saturday--beautiful architecture and views. The hospital has a long and proud history in SF, opening in 1867 to care for Gold Rush pioneers and continuing as an "almshouse"--a place of refuge for people who are chronically ill or improverished with nowhere else to go.
"God's Hotel" is an excellent, prize-winning book about the place--and about the practice of medicine in general--written by a long-time LH doctor ,Victoria Sweet.
