Tickle Your Tastebuds: Gaumenkitzel

Sketching the Pastries
When we visited Berkeley’s very colorful Gaumenkitzel Restaurant, they offered us a large “community” table where we could sketch and snack all evening. After most of the other customers had left, one sketcher pulled her chair right up to the pastry case to get a better look. Gaumenkitzel means “Tickle Your Taste Buds.” Just saying the name feels tickly on the tongue.

Gaumenkitzel

Statuary, pomegranates and beer selections
There are always interesting things to draw on the shelves at Gaumenkitzel while enjoying German food, beer and dessert. No one seems to mind when we spread our paint boxes and sketchbooks across a communal table and get creative.

Late Winter Sketches at Gaumenkitzel and the Peoples Barber and Shop

Gaumenkitzel is one of our favorite restaurants to sketch with its flying carousel horse and friendly staff.
Thank you People Barber and Shop for letting us sketch your establishment. We really had a good time.

Please see group members' sketches in previous posts for both places.

Gaumenkitzel, Berkeley

We always enjoy sketching at Gaumenkitzel. The restaurant is attractive, the wait staff kind and accommodating, and the German pop songs are a kick.

The highlight of my snack was definitely the German draft beer sampler. However, the Brezel with Wiener Knackwurst proved to be a good still life subject.

Gaumenkitzel

We sat at the big center table at the colorful German restaurant, Gaumenkitzel, on San Pablo, a certified green business offering homestyle food and featuring an ample selection of Teutonic beer and pastries.  The staff was really lovely to us, appreciating our creativity and recommending their favorite brews.

Gaumenkitzel Restaurant

This German restaurant on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley was packed on a Thursday night because the owners of Gaumenkitzel were generously donating 20% of their profits to the Berkeley Public Schools' Cooking and Gardening Program.  Lots of families in the crowd.

Prost!

Enjoyed German food at a restaurant called Gaumenkitzel in Berkeley. I could hardly pronounce anything on the menu beyond two syllables so I did a lot of pointing. Made me want to hop on a plane and do some traveling! -- Vivian Aldridge

Dinner at Gaumenkitzel

It was the perfect place to be on a cold winter night. Good food, good beer and a welcoming staff. Holiday decorations on the tables and a decorated tree.

"Palate-tickling"

The translation of Gaumenkitzel! More elegant in German, more fun in English. The food is great, the vibe relaxed.

Susan's Dinner at Gaumenkitzel

Susan's Dinner, graphite and gouache,7x9 inches
When we met a Gaumentkitzel for sketch night I'd already had dinner so just ordered a decaf and sketched Susan's dinner instead. I added gouache at home. Here is Susan's sketch and photo of the same meal and here are a bunch of sketches from this charming and friendly Berkeley restaurant.

Holiday Visit to Gaumenkitzel

Back to the German restaurant on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, all decorated with Christmas wreaths, lights and a tree.  Glad to see their increasing success--so many diners here this year (compared to our visit last December).

Diners under the carousel horse hung over the bar.

No dearth of beer choices!
